With yet another victory, 2-1 against Wolues FC, VG United moved clear of the Sugar Boys, who dropped points in a six-goal thriller with Lion Heart FC, atop the National League standings.
VG Utd’s latest win came the hard way as they went behind against the Wolues thanks to a 43rd minute strike from James Malley. However, the young guns regrouped at the half time interval and were level courtesy of a Joel Mars goal in the 58th minute and then nabbed all three points as Devante Samuels netted the winner in the 87th minute.
“Wolues are a very good opponent, and it was a very slippery surface after the rains. We couldn’t play our usual possession game and the Wolues dominated the first half” commented Manager Jermain Abrams “we did concede eight or so corners in the first half and their opener came from a mistake by us. However, at half time the coaches, Ritchie Morton and Glen Bascombe made some adjustments, and the second half was a different game. We could sense the equalizer was coming and ultimately despite it being an even contest we were able to grind out the winner.”
The Sugar Boys lost some ground against their cross-town rivals when they hosted Lion Heart on the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground in a thoroughly entertaining and open game that ended 3-3.
Lion Heart went ahead in just the 3rd minute when Bishon Richards scored, Derol Redhead made it 1-1 in the 10th minute, but goals from Cordel Dallaway in the 13th and Osaniss Bassaragh in the 33rd minute, meant that Lion Heart silenced the crowd going into a 3-1 lead. However, Redhead, so often the savior for the Boys pulled one back in the 36th minute to make it 3-2.
Alejandro Sanchez then scored to tie the score at 3-3.
“The game was an eye opener for us” noted Derol Redhead “Lion Heart came with a high energy approach and exploited our defense weaknesses early on. They always enjoy playing us and always want to beat us, however we gradually got back into the game and were able to dominate the second half. We could have had all three points, but possibly a draw was fair given our first half performance. We have some things to work on at training and will definitely be doing that before our next game against Rebels.”
The other game played at the weekend saw Panthers FC race into a 3-1 lead against Positive FC only to be pegged back by a resurgent Positive side and then having to hold on to secure a 3-2 win.
Dylan Marvin Pierre put the Panthers ahead in the 11th minute, Lenroy Levon Dennis made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute and Reuben Stoby made it 3 in the 45th minute. However Positive gave themselves a lifeline in added time at the end of the first half when Jean Wilhelm Jeudy scored from the penalty spot and then in the 56th minute Ryan Blagrove made it 3-2 game, but Panthers were able to hold on to get the win.
“It was good team performance from us to be honest2 said Coach Stany Francis “I am pleased with the win. Goals came from all departments, wing, midfield, and defense. Leading 3-0 and ending with 3-2 was a bit of a scare towards the end but with great team spirit we managed to pull through. We will continue to train and raise fitness levels and continue growing together as a team.”
