With an all important 2-1 victory, which will have serious repercussions on the legitimate National League title chasing teams, the Islanders FC may well have put Sugar Boys FC out of contention.
A look at the latest standings now shows, following wins for both the Islanders and Wolues at the weekend, VG United are still top with 28 points from 11 games, Wolues are second on 24 points from 10 games , Islanders sit third on 20 points also from 10 games and Sugar Boys sit fourth on 16 points from 11 games, surely a mountain to climb.
So, whilst football is a “funny old game” most pundits now agree it is a three-horse race!
The win for Islanders came courtesy of goals from Antonio Rodney, who opened the scoring in just the third minute, and Deshaun Bassaragh who scored the winner after Romaine Henry had equalized for Sugar Boys in the 33rd minute.
“Well done to my team” exclaimed Fitzroy Daley, Manager / Coach of the Islanders. “It was a hard fought game, but we came through despite seemingly being on the wrong end of some decisions. We did extremely well to keep our discipline and for the most part played the better football. We overcame lots of breaks in play and a surface which didn’t really suit our style, but these are the moments and things you have to overcome to be successful. We train for them, have a game plan, and stuck to it. We can only improve and as long as the guys keep working, we will be serious title contenders.”
Wolues FC are also firmly in the mix for the title come the end of the season and they kept up winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Lion Heart FC.
“We started the game well” commented Wolues player, Phil Nelson “our passing had really improved since the last game and after scoring a couple of goals, felt comfortable. The unfortunate red card for our keeper changed things, especially as we conceded shortly afterwards, but luckily half time came quickly, and we were able to make some changes. An early goal in the second half settled any nerves we may have had and despite hanging on a bit in the last fifteen minutes or so, full credit to the players as they dug in and eked out the all-important three points.”
Hugo Costa Liziario and Noel Maxwell had made the score 2-0 to Wolues inside the first half an hour, but then the red card and an own goal made it 2-1 at the break. Craig Tulloch scored the all important third goal for Wolues in the 52nd minute and despite Bishon Richards scoring to make it 3-2, Lion Heart couldn’t find an equalizer.
The other game played saw Positive FC beat Old Madrid FC 4-0 with goals from Ahkeem Codrington who scored twice, Omar Tummings and Daniel Patrick.
Both VG Uniteds and Sugar Boys FC’s points totals reflect the three point deduction handed down by the Disciplinary Committee.
