Whilst the Sugar Boys FC and VG United were battling it out on the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground, the Wolues FC produced yet another free scoring masterclass to dismantle Rebels FC and go second in the standings.
The Virgin Gorda “El Classico” became more like a Gladiatorial combat than the polished spectacle the two side usually produce, but with tension running high, bragging rights fuelling the fire and the only thing separating the two teams in a 1-1 draw was the referee brandishing red cards as tempers flared and fists flew.
Eight red cards in total, four to each team and two yellows, oh and a goal each from Bernard Cumberbatch and Derol Redhead.
“a very exciting game that ended in a sad way, but it was a derby and a very competitive one at that” stated Redhead “As tempers rose in a tense finish, both teams searching for the winner, and neither prepared to cede any ground. The heat of the moment got the better of the players and it was a shame for the fans that it ended that way.”
Jermain Abrams, VG manager also commented that “the first half finished 0-0 thanks to our keeper, but the changes we made seemed to open things up and despite conceding we always looked likely to equalize. The game turned on a nothing situation and things escalated in the heat of the moment. It is an emotional game but we need the players to keep things in check and it was a shame for the fans who came out. Both teams let them down and we can only apologize”
Wolues meanwhile are averaging over five goals a game and maintained that with a 5-1 victory against Rebels, as Hugo Costa Liziario scored his 7th and 8th goals of the campaign in the 45th +2 and 90th minutes. Marcus Robinson in the 62nd and Noel Maxwell in the 81st also found the back of the net whilst they were also gifted an own goal.
“We dominated the game, but it seemed like an age until we got our first goal, and we were getting a little frustrated” noted Phil Nelson “The rebels goalkeeper was outstanding throughout the game, it could’ve been more, but the three points is all we wanted. Rebels seemed to be missing a few key players, but we still had to get the job done. We can improve a lot and hope we can do that in our next match.”
