Virgin Gorda United leapfrogged over Lion Heart FC to go top of the National League with a resounding 8-0 victory over new boys Avengers FC on Sunday 27th October at the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground

The game was played at a high tempo and completely dominated by VGU as they raced into four goal lead by half time with strikes from Jaadon Quashie, Jadon Abrams (2) and Ikyjah Williams. Further goals then came in the second half as the onslaught continued. Kijuan Nimblett, Shamar Ollivierre and own goal and Joel Mars all added their names to the score sheet.

“For the second game of the season it was a good game” noted Manager Jermain Abrams “There were things we could have done better, kept our focus better. We need to work on a lot of things to become an elite team. Our keeper, KJ, did an excellent job on his debut, keeping a clean sheet, the defense also did well and of course upfront we scored a lot of goals. Kudos must go to the continuing work of the coaches, Richie Morton, and Glenn Bascombe.”

Sitting in second spot in the table, purely on goal difference, is Lion Heart FC, who have greatly improved under new coach Leroy Henry and are now unbeaten in two after securing a 3-1 victory over One Love FC.

Tyrone Buddah’s brace proved the difference as he opened the scoring and then got his team back in front after Travalata Francis had leveled the game before Justic Browne put some icing on the cake.

“It’s been a fantastic start to the season” commented Manager Winston Brown “In our first match we had a clean sheet and scored six, in this match we told ourselves we would win. The coach set a strategic plan, and the team executed it perfectly to get the three points. We are playing with a new sense of purpose, satisfaction and enjoying our football.”

The defending champions, Wolues FC sit in third place also with two wins from two as they came away for a seven-goal thriller with a 4-3 victory over Sugar Boys FC
Leo Forte put the Wolues ahead inside ten minutes, but the Sugar Boys struck back twice through Kerron Monro and Andres Bailey to take a narrow lead into the break. Hugo Costa Liziario equalized just after the restart and then a Wolues own goal gifted back the lead to the Sugar Boys. That advantage lasted less than a minute before the Boys themselves gifted an own goal to Wolues and then to rub salt into that wound, Forte popped up in the dying moments of the game to net the winner for Wolues.

“The first half was really quite poor from us” stated Nelson “We sat off them too much, lacked any intensity and allowed them to play it around quite nicely. However, at half time we had a good chat and in the second half played with much better desire and quality. The team is full of great characters, and we never give up. Overall, it was a tough game on a bad pitch against a good, experienced team so we are delighted with the three points.”

Also at the Weekend, the Panthers FC got their first points of the new season with a battling 2-2 draw with Positive FC, who grabbed the equalizer right as time expired, through a penalty by Mathurin Rosier. Isiah Mkandawire opened the scoring before Darren Henry pulled Panthers level. An own goal restored the Panthers lead and seemingly had them well on their way to all three points before the dramatic ending.

“We are far from pleased by the performance and the result.” Bemoaned Asst coach, Rolando Codner “We started the game poorly with numerous errors which led to Positive’s first goal, and it took us until the 30th minute to settle in the game and start stringing together a few passes. We played a much better second half and eventually took the lead. From then on, we were extremely wasteful in front of the goal and were made to rue those missed chances as another error saw us give away a penalty. I must give credit to Positive FC; they are a much better team this season. We must improve as well to get our season back on track and I’m confident that we will.”

To round out the weekend, Islanders FC had a comfortable 5-0 win against Rebels FC, with the goals coming from Rogel Noel, Carlos Septus, Antonio Rodney, and an own goal.
