Following semi final victories last time out, VG United will meet Wolues FC in the President’s Cup Final on Sunday May 21st at the FA’s stadium venue in East End / Long Look with a kickoff at 5.30pm.
The pair finished third and fourth in the National League standings to reach the Big Four semi finals where VG Utd faced the Champion side, One Love FC and came away with a 3-2 win.
Sheldon Tony put VG ahead in just the 4th minute before Collin Lavia equalized in the 19th minute. Jermain May put One Love ahead in the 36th, but Levon Williams made it 2-2 in the 78th and Tony scored the winner for VG in the last minute of the game.
“It was a beautiful game against a good team” commented VG Manager, Jermain Abrams “we analyzed previous games against One Love and every player got a clip to show how they could do things better. We had a game plan and stuck to it, neutralized their quick wingers and we played with confidence. As the game went on, we kept up the pressure and got the result we deserved.”
Abrams also thanked his Coaches Glen Bascombe and Richie Morton as well as the more experienced players who kept the youngsters in the team going at crucial moments.
Wolues squeezed past Sugar Boys, 1-0, on a goal from Christopher Pease on the stroke of half time.
“It was a tight game with not so many chances.” Noted Phil Nelson “We set out to compete, make it difficult for them to play their passing game and hope the quality of our forward players would get us over the line. We have scored lots of goals from free kicks and corners this season and it’s great to keep that going – our goal coming from a header off a corner. It wasn’t all that pretty but the pitch was poor, and the win is all we wanted.”
According to Nelson, everyone is now looking forward to the Final and what will be a tough game against a quality and energetic VG team.
“A good number of our players have played in finals here in the BVI, including winning one, so we are hoping we can use our experience of the occasion and play our best game to get that win” he concluded.
Dean Greenaway, The Competitions Chair, has also confirmed that after the game not only will awards be given to the winners of the Presidents Cup, but also the 2022-23 League Championship trophy will be presented to One Love FC. Both Sugar Boys FC, who were runners up, and Wolues FC, who finished third will receive medals.
The Referees will be acknowledged, the Golden Boot, the MVP, the Golden Glove, the League Fair Play award, and the Manager of the Year award will also be presented.
Action kicks off at 5.30pm on Sunday 21st May at East End / Long Look.
